Restart, Refresh, Recommit!

Would you agree that this is such a perfect time to start something new? What about those of us who are taking the time to continue to build what we started pre-quarantine? Why stop now? Keep going!

We have so much to be thankful for, like our health, our safety and our family. And yes, I even mean those kids we call our children who during the quarantine made me question if they were children of Jessica or children of the corn… 🙂 But hey, we wanted to become parents, right?

Lets chat for a moment about our goals post-quarantine. Many took this time as an opportunity to reconnect, rebuild, rebrand or refresh. Whatever their direction was, we must acknowledge one thing – action. They took action to do something for their lives, their families or business. As we begin our new norm and schedules begin to fill up, work starts to pick up and we go back to some level of our new “busy”, let’s work together to identify some areas in your life or in your business that are begging you for attention and need you to take action on today!

Ask yourself these questions: 

  • Something I committed to in January of 2020 but am procrastinating on is __________. 
  • An item on my “to do” list that I have carried over more than once is __________. 
  • Some items in my closet that I’ve been holding on to and have not worn in over a year are __________.
  • I promised my daughter/son a few months ago that I would help them with __________. 
  • A system I keep putting off but need to implement in my business in order to create efficiencies is __________.
  • The person I met at the last networking event (pre-covid19) which I’ve been meaning to connect with is __________. 

Now these are just some examples to help you think… Ultimately, you know deep down what exactly is tugging at your hurt or your mind. You know… That thing that keeps coming up at night when you’re already cozy in bed  and you made the decision to do in the morning… Yeah, that one!

Narrow it down and outline two to three action items that you’ll be able to start working on right away. Regardless of how big or small they are, take these action steps to plan and help you restart what you had been working on pre-quarantine. It will help you renew and refresh your mind in order to work with more clarity. And finally, make the decision to recommit to your goals. Your future self will thank you!

3 Lessons I Learned During Quarantine

Hey there! 

Like most of you, never did I ever think that we would be facing a global pandemic in the year that we were all manifesting, ok ok ok I was chanting, it would be the year of 2020 vision! While there was talk of this COVID 19 thing, like everything else I thought to myself “this too shall pass”. But then, we were quarantined!

Now let me share with you that this was a really hard time for me. You see, I have silently suffered from anxiety for some years and 2019 was the year that my life experiences brought it out to light. So of course, with breathing exercises as well as creating some boundaries, I’ve tried my best to manage through it, but nonetheless, a quarantine really does help your emotions get the best of you.

So I was interviewed recently on the “3 Lessons I Learned During Quarantine” by Annabelle Bayhan, Course Creator and Coach and I wanted to share those 3 here lessons (and maybe a little more) with y’all here on my blog.

Here they go: 

1) The importance of being present in your family.

I can’t begin to tell you how important it is to be here. Now most of you know I’m a time blocker, so going on a whim is really hard for me, but with all this time on my hands where I can do what I want, when I want, how I want and as long as I want, I realized a few things:

– It’s ok to binge watch TV with your kids or your love, especially when they ask you. Yes, I know they’ve watched 90 Day Fiance, Frozen & Twilight a million times… buttttt, never during a pandemic. That’s a first! So yes, I binged with them and have no shame!

– Ways to be more creative in the kitchen since there’s no hustle or bustle. Yes, I’m from New York and my hustle has never stopped! So, when we’re home as a family of 6, we have to get creative and what better way than… wait for it… let the kids take over the kitchen! Between a Toston Burger and Monkey Bread and french toast among other deliciousness that my hubby prepares, it’s no wonder I need to go on a ZERO carb diet after this! But yes, I enjoyed every bite because it was made with love.

2) The importance of clarity as it relates to getting things done.

– This was the perfect time to work on some decluttering and organization. I have so much stuff being donated that I believe it has decreased my net worth and we’re not even done yet. My teens took some time to go over their entire closets and even help with the little ones. Considering my teens tend to spend a lot of time in their rooms, it was great to see them bonding, laughing and just spending time together.

– Decluttering helped me work on my productivity because a cluttered life is the equivalent of a cluttered mind. I found clarity and fresh ideas on what to start writing about and how to provide you guys with additional value because my greatest joy is to serve you.

3) The importance of investing in yourself.

– This was my favorite lesson learned because it provided me with extra time to learn the things I kept telling myself I had no time for. I took an additional business course. I read extra books (which I’ll share on another post). I even learned how to do my own nails… although my daughter did 75% of the work.

– I took the time to pamper myself a bit extra. I can’t tell you how rewarding it is when you decide to make self-care a priority. So get that extra mask on, exfoliate your skin, soak up some sun (with sunscreen of course) and take an extra 5-10 minutes in the shower. And while I mention that, I mean taking the time to cry. I’ve had the moments where I just need to be alone for a few and the shower has been that special place for me. So I challenge you to make self-care a priority. You can thank me later!

Now listen, or keep reading, getting things done during this time is important. Yes! Especially knowing there’s a due date, a deadline, a time coming soon before the country reopens and we get back to normal. But what is truly normal for you and your family? I’ll let you ponder on that so that you can answer the question for yourself.

Presence, Clarity and Self-care

As the country adapts to this new norm, businesses work on reinventing themselves, medicine becomes more advanced and neighbors learn how to pull together regardless of political affiliation, natural origin, race, religion or gender, what are you doing to reinvent yourself? What’s in your morning routine?

Aside from snoozing the alarm, rushing to pick out your clothes or running out the door with a cup of coffee which may or may not have a secured lid that you pray won’t spill on your white shirt because it could just become a disastrous morning (not like it happened to me).

The way in which we start our morning can be detrimental to the way in which we handle the remainder of the day. This is why, it’s so important to have a morning routine that helps you think positive thoughts and boost your confidence the moment we open our eyes after a good night’s sleep. It is very well known that in order to live a positive life, we must have a positive mind.

Trust me, I know how easily our minds wander into negative thoughts and attitudes that don’t help our growth. This is why it’s so important to train our minds to do the complete opposite. Hal Elrod talks about daily affirmations in his book “Miracle Morning”. He writes in depth about the importance of starting our days with what he called the SAVERS method which consists of:

  • Silence
  • Affirmations
  • Vision
  • Excerxise
  • Reading
  • Scribing

I love this process and while I’ve implemented most of them on a consistent basis, scribing has become an amazing outlet for me to work through those small triggers that can impact my anxiety levels. I can’t even begin to tell you how important writing has become in my life.

I also have my affirmations printed and placed nearby so that I am able to see these every morning as I wake up. Daily affirmations have certainly framed my thoughts into envisioning my end goal and working towards living a positive life. Let’s face it, we all want to start our day ready to conquer ANYTHING!

Unfortunately, our thoughts automatically focus on the negative side of mindset. You take in the who, the what, and the where. Every feeling, all the things and people around you…it can be an overwhelming thought but every detail counts.

3 habits that you can start today that will help you save hours a day

Are you currently putting your head down on the pillow at night wondering where all your time went? 

It seemed like only a few minutes ago when your alarm went off. 

And then life just happened. 

Then back in bed we go. 

I used to be stuck in the SAME exact cycle. I felt like I never had enough time to work on my passion projects outside of working my 9-5. 

You may be wondering…how did the Own It planner come to life when I was working my 9-5? I found a few hours in my day by using these three habits. Let’s dive in!

1). I tracked my time religiously. 

You have probably heard this one before and may be rolling your eyes at the thought. Taking time to document how you spend your time is the best way to learn HOW you are actually using your time. (Good and bad!

You can easily use a timer app like Clockify or Toggl to track, categorize, and label your time. Easily pull a report for you to then review at the end of the week so you can identify what tasks are eating up your time. (But may not be moving the needle!) Not to mention where you will be able to trim it down at! You can easily self identify some areas where you need to work on or even delegate to save some time in your day.

2). Write everything down. 

This simple practice will save you time and energy so you don’t have to try and “remember” everything. By writing it the Brain Dump section of the Own It Planner or in a traditional notebook, you let your tools help you to remember. Gone are the days of forgetting about that meeting or ordering more dog food. Become more effective and save time by writing it all down. 

3). Audit your tasks. 

You may be wondering…how will spending time on auditing actually help me save more time? When you audit your tasks on a monthly basis, you can focus on what aligns with your goals. And if you are not sure what goals you should be focusing and working on…we need to chat!

When you sit down and do your audit, you are able to focus on self-accountability and reprioritize when things do not go as planned. When you are juggling all the pieces, being flexible is key to progress.

Finding Your Passion

Its amazing how we know we have been called for a bigger purpose, but we can’t always seem to identify what that is. One of the most common questions I’m asked when coaching is “how do I find my passion?” Many times our greatest success comes from our darkest moments. We may not see it, but as time goes on and wounds start to heel, we start get clarity which leads us to stepping into our greatness!

While there is no cookie cutter when it comes to reinventing ourselves to pursue a career change, an entrepreneurial journey or even to get to the next level in our current careers, there are certainly some self-reflection techniques we can use. Allow me to share a few helpful tips when it comes to identifying your passions and your purpose.

Tip # 1 – Identify what you hate to do and what you absolutely love doing!

Make a list. There are many things we can point out when it comes to identifying our passions. Is what you’re doing draining you or is it fulfilling? What does your body language and mindset tell you? Listen to those signs to determine your approach. My favorite author, John Maxwell, says that “attitude is contagious”. When we lack confidence in one simple area of our lives, what do you think your audience will pick up on?

Tip # 2 – Research what you need to do in order to make your idea successful.

For example, if you want to facilitate a webinar, research what you need to do in order to design your curriculum and start an online webinar. Both of these have cost-effective options that can make your job easier. It takes time to learn a new skill, be patient yet focused.

Tip # 3 – Survey your audience.

Identify what your ideal client is looking for. Narrow down the type of clientele you are looking to serve. Know where to find your ideal client. A great example of this is when I formed my nonprofit organization. We focus on teens, now did you think my ideal clients were teens? Nope. While the curriculum is based on what teens want to see, my ideal clients are parents and school administrators. Those are the ones who will find value in our program.

Tip # 4 – Be Flexible

Give yourself permission to change your mind when the straight path you thought to be traveling suddenly comes to a split. Know when to walk away or when to stay the course. Keep your mind on the goal, but be flexible with the journey.

In summary…

Finding our passion does not always turn into entrepreneurship. Author Christy Wright always says “a hobby will cost you money and a business will make you money”. Know the difference. I hope these tips will help you identify your passion. Need a coach? Contact me.

Balance Is What You Make It

As women, we tend to overcommit ourselves because we want to prove we can handle it or simply not wanting to face the fear of saying “no”. Whether you look like you have it all under control or are running around aimlessly, you might agree that there is no special formula that creates balance. You see, balance is what you make it. Yes… You!

While there are areas in our lives that are non-negotiable, we always tend to work it all out because we perceive balance to be something different based on the task at hand. I’ve gathered some great tips on improving balance in your life. Review these tips and start implementing them today. I’m sure you will find some that you are already working on.

1. Manage Your Time

There are tons of time management tools you can use. Some of the most common are prioritizing your workload, time-blocking to ensure you have uninterrupted time and scheduling yourself in advance. Which ever you decide, just make sure it works for you. Be intentional and consistent in order to conquer time management. Plan ahead!

2. Take Time for You

Add yourself to your “To Do” list. How many times do we go through a list and nowhere on it are doing the things we love or need to do? Stop feeling guilty about taking time for you! Think of this… even the airlines tell you to place your own oxygen mask first and then help others around you. Remember that you are no good to everyone else if you don’t take care of yourself first.

3. Compromise

Sometimes life gets in the way and we have to adjust. Give yourself permission to compromise when you need to. Always keep in mind that whatever you put off today, you will have to work on harder tomorrow. There are moments that we will have to learn to be flexible. Whether its going to the gym, family time or your favorite show on TV, know that you will have to give something up. What are you willing to compromise? What are your non-negotiables?

4. Learn to say No

We love saying yes to everyone and everything! But lets face it, taking on an additional project with a tight deadline or adding more stress to an already stressful routine is sometimes just not worth it. Learn to say no! But if a decision requires some thought, ask additional questions and take additional time before you commit.

The Power of Comparison

I tend to spend a lot of time listening to podcasts, e-books or watching webinars on different subjects. This week I listened to multiple topics which all had one consistent message:

Don’t allow the power of comparison to impact your success and prevent you from walking in your purpose!

Powerful right? Many times we allow our view of someone else’s journey to make us criticize our own journey in the worst way. Why? Because we tend to be our own worst critics. Comparison can lead to so many issues. Just to name a few, these issues can be seen as financial trouble, poor decision making, unrealistic goals and a tremendously negative impact to our mental health.

How do we work on not trying to keep up with the Joneses? What can we do when we feel like we’re either stuck or lost with no direction?

• Give yourself permission to make mistakes. Don’t try to fake perfection.
• Our success is not determined by someone else’s success. If you’re following someone else’s journey, then you’re not designing your own.
• Acknowledge when you need help. Check-in with a friend, a business mentor or accountability partner. Sometimes you just need candid feedback to get you back on track.
• Learn from your successes and your failures. Also, learn from other people in your tribe who you look up to. It’s amazing what they’ve been through to be where they are.

Be firm on your goals, yet flexible with your process on achieving them. If you can take away one thing from this message, remember this: We are in competition with no one other than ourselves! Strive to improve yourself, focus on what makes you awesome, learn to go where there is no path in order to create your own and most importantly… watch yourself grow!
